The Ventura County Sheriff's Office is currently seeking candidates to establish an eligibility list for the position of Deputy Sheriff Trainee/Deputy Sheriff. All candidates must complete the FrontLine National exam through the National Testing Network (NTN) and submit a County of Ventura employment application to be considered further in the hiring process.
Candidates are also required to take the Public Safety Self Assessments (PSSA) available through their candidate account. It is recommended to complete the PSSA as soon as possible to avoid any delays in the process.

The Position
Under immediate supervision and instruction, the Deputy Sheriff Trainee undergoes Academy training in preparation for appointment as a Deputy Sheriff.
About The Ventura County Criminal Justice Training Center (Academy):
Attendance at the Academy is paid time and is non-residential, meaning trainees return home at the end of each day.
A pre-academy orientation is provided to ensure trainees can maximize their experience.
Training includes areas such as leadership, professionalism, ethics, criminal law, laws of evidence, vehicle operations, arrest and control, firearms, patrol procedures, traffic enforcement/investigation, criminal investigation, custody operations, community policing and problem-solving, cultural diversity, oral/written communications, first aid, and physical fitness.
Upon successful completion of the Academy, Deputy Sheriff Trainees may be promoted to Deputy Sheriff. Newly appointed Deputy Sheriffs will initially be assigned to custody duties, ensuring secure and humane detention for incarcerated individuals. After a period of time, deputies will rotate to patrol duties, including building community partnerships, preventing crime, protecting life and property, enforcing laws, conducting investigations, assisting in case preparation, testifying in court, and providing public assistance.

Salary Information
Deputy Sheriff Trainee: $40.17 per hour
Deputy Sheriff: $42.18 per hour
Upon successful academy completion, the incumbent may be eligible for promotion to Deputy Sheriff with an annual salary of $87,734.
