Senior Power System Engineer - Commissioning And Testing

Senior Power System Engineer - Commissioning And Testing
Company:

Transpower New Zealand

Details of the offer

Collaborate with electricity industry participants and stakeholders.
Ensure generation assets enhance the reliability and security of the power system.
Use dynamic simulation models of generation assets to perform analysis.
Bring your influencing skills and appreciation of power generation assets to the System Operator.
Important Mahi at heart of the electricity sector!
Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.
Our Power Systems Group within Operations provides multifaceted power system analysis and engineering, risk, and assurance management.
This work supports Transpower in its role as System Operator to meet its principal performance obligations and operate the New Zealand electricity market and power system for today, and into the future towards high penetration levels of renewable or inverter generation technologies, including energy storage systems like large-scale grid and small-scale distribution connected batteries.
About The Team Our Engineering Assurance team works with industry participants, such as generators and distributors, to understand how their assets perform against their obligations so we can ensure our Grid and System Operations team can take this into account and mitigate existing and future power system risks.
The team works closely with the Electricity Authority to evolve the Electricity Industry Participants Code (the Code), and with Asset Owners to understand their assets' capabilities and performance against the Code, investigate system events, and commission and test new or existing assets connected to the power system.
We also manage the division's event investigation, risk, and assurance frameworks.
The opportunity Bring your attention to detail, problem solving, and relationship management skills and work with generation and distribution asset owners and other stakeholders for commissioning and testing projects, whilst considering the implications of an evolving New Zealand power system to power system operations, system security, and stability.
You'll utilise both your technical leadership and influencing skills, and predict how the transmission system, generation assets, and consumer loads would respond during a system event or disturbance (e.g.
asset tripping or weather events).
We have an unprecedented number of new connection requests, including large scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems.
You'll be involved in ensuring these inverter-based technologies integrate with the existing generation fleet and the transmission grid effectively.
Working with collaborative and knowledgeable peers, you'll broaden and deepen your power system analysis skills and understanding of not only the pieces in the puzzle, but how they fit together and interact in the real world.
Longer term, with outstanding performance, we'll encourage you to look at career development opportunities, including secondments, lateral promotion, or other technical or people leader roles.
About You You may be working for a generator or Engineering Consultancy or working in engineering projects.
Perhaps you started your career on the tools with hands on experience in commissioning and testing.
This will have honed your ability to build effective relationships with customers and talk their language so you can quickly improve customer's understanding of their obligations in the Code.
As a Senior Engineer in the Transpower context, you'll have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, power electronics, or a related field, and CPEng or an international equivalent.
Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate: 7+ years' experience in commissioning and testing with industrial equipment, preferably with generation assets OR engineering project management experience with high-voltage electrical equipment.
The ability to lead large engineering or technical projects from feasibility through to commercial operation.
Well-developed verbal and written communication skills to enable you to influence, convey and exchange information with clarity.
Knowledge and experience working the electrical industry modelling and analysing synchronous or inverter generation technologies.
Competence in power system analysis tools to support building dynamic power system models and performing load flow and time domain simulations; ideally DSA Tools (TSAT) or DIgSILENT PowerFactory is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others to grow engineering capability.
A relevant master's degree/PhD is desirable as is membership of professional affiliations and industry working groups, such as CIGRE, IEEE, IET or EEA.
Knowledge of the New Zealand Electricity Industry Participation Code is an advantage.
If you are an Engineer interested in working with us and feel that you meet most of these criteria but not all, we may be able to work together to further develop your skills and experience over time.
Join us at Transpower Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here.

We will support your wellbeing, with a range of employee health and wellness benefits on the job learning, and professional development.
Next steps To contribute to transitioning Aotearoa New Zealand to a more renewable energy system, please review the position description available on our careers site and apply without delay.
For experienced/senior candidates we are open to you being based in Wellington, Hamilton, Auckland, or Christchurch and happy to consider part time or job share arrangements if required.
At engineer level, as a power systems professional, our Wellington and Hamilton offices are best, so we can support your learning.
Role closes Sunday 25 August.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and you may be contacted prior to the closing date to facilitate shortlisting.
