Senior Policy Analyst at NZ Defence Force, Wellington - Wairarapa Mo te tunga | About the role
You will support the delivery of Veterans' Affairs' objectives by leading the development of high-quality, innovative, evidence-based policy interventions and policy frameworks in new, contentious, sensitive or complex areas or issues. You will provide advice and support on policy matters within the Policy Team and more broadly within Veterans' Affairs.
You will be a valued senior member of a small dedicated Policy Team, which covers both operational and strategic policy work. As a senior member of the team you will support the development of less-experienced staff through mentoring, coaching and effective leadership of policy development.
This is a 12 month fixed term opportunity. You will be based in Wellington CBD. Once you have undergone training and are up to speed, there is the option of working from home up to two days a week.
This role requires someone who has excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to prioritise well, and can work across a number of projects simultaneously and adapt to changing circumstances.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Extensive experience developing and delivering high quality policy in complex and challenging environments and as part of cross-government policy processes.
Knowledge and experience in the full policy process from scoping, problem definition, consideration and assessment of options, including rigorous regulatory impact assessments and cost-benefit analysis, as well as considering implementation, risk mitigation and evaluation requirements.
Highly developed communication skills including the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles.
Extensive knowledge of the machinery of Government and demonstrated knowledge of political administrative processes and structures.
Experience using a range of analytical frameworks, including developing new frameworks.
Significant involvement in a number of major policy projects in new, contentious, sensitive or complex areas or issues.
Experience leading strategic conversations internally and externally and working collaboratively and constructively with a range of people from different professional and technical disciplines to develop policy and to reach successful outcomes.
Experience contributing to the delivery of high quality, timely support and advice to Ministers.
Experience developing and maintaining policy capability by mentoring and supervising less experienced staff through the policy development process.

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria:
You must be a New Zealand citizen or hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.
You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
