We are seeking a passionate, committed Consultant Renal Physician (1.0 FTE + on-call, fixed term for 3 months from September 2024, with the potential to extend to 12 months) to join our dynamic, progressive and multidisciplinary department at Waikato Hospital, the largest tertiary hospital in New Zealand. Mo tatou Ratonga | About our Service
Our department comprises an inpatient ward including an acute dialysis unit, and a recently commissioned Regional Renal Centre on the Waikato Hospital campus. The service covers all aspects of renal medicine, apart from acute kidney transplantation and has a home based treatment philosophy. We have one of the largest peritoneal dialysis populations in Australasia with over 200 patients, and around 100 on home haemodialysis. The service supports 200 transplant recipients regionally and has a network of hospital based dialysis units, the largest of which is based at the Midland Regional Renal Centre on the Waikato DHB campus.
The opportunity exists to undertake interventional and procedural work for those with aptitude and previous experience (renal biopsy, tunnelled lines with fluoroscopy, Tenckhoff catheter insertion). The service functions as a hub and spoke model for the Midland catchment and provides renal services to 4 Districts (Waikato, Lakes, Bay of Plenty and Tairawhiti). There are currently 7 renal physicians supported by a Resident Medical Officer team (5 registrars and 2 senior house officers) and an experienced and passionate team of nursing and allied health staff. An additional strength of the regional service includes our clinical research unit which has an energetic research programme, including trials of novel agents. As a Regional Renal Service we provide renal care to a population of 750,000, with outpatient clinics in Hamilton and five secondary hospitals.
Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital and one of five campuses of the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The appointees will have opportunities to become involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
