About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for a Fire Protection Engineer to join our growing Buildings team in New Zealand. We are looking for someone who is looking to join a collaborative team working on iconic and exciting projects.
We are looking for someone to plan, design, and direct engineering projects that prevent, detect, control or reduce fire and smoke in buildings and structures. You would recommend materials, equipment, or systems to assist in safeguarding life and property against fire, as well as analyse how fire behaves and model how safety features perform in a fire. In addition, you will assess the fire protection needs within projects and create drawings and schematics of projects using computer-aided design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM) software.
Day to day tasks would involve:
Perform fire protection engineering design which may include fire extinguishing devices and systems, fire detection systems (fire alarms),
Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus systems (VESDA), fire suppression systems, smoke control systems, emergency voice communications systems, and emergency warning systems.
Perform calculations to analyse and design engineering system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
Assist in the evaluation and selection of engineering systems and the development of engineering specifications.
Contribute to the development of engineering systems, through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
Assist in the preparation of engineering project documents, client presentations, client contact and communication pertaining to specific project deliverables.
Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
Prepare engineering documents by developing engineering specifications, plans and schedules.
Assist in the review of shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, prepare site observation reports, and performs other contract administration tasks.
Recognize when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
Attend project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.
Participate in value engineering and basic cost estimating to support engineering projects.
Perform other duties as assigned by senior engineering staff.
Engineer of record on own work product and that of more junior staff.
Confirm adherence to specifications during each phase of a project. Monitor project progress, inspect installation sites, and verify calculations and placements.
What we are ideally looking for:
Hold a Bachelor of Engineering – Structural or Fire or Mechanical, or Bachelor of Science
Ideally be a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) (Fire Safety) listed on National Engineer Register (NER) or Chartered Engineer through The Institute of Fire Engineers
Previous experience in Consulting within the Building services industry
Knowledge of the Building Code of New Zealand and relevant New Zealand Standards
Ability to independently undertake project and technical analysis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong problem-solving skills
Ability to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines
Positive, can-do attitude and strong work ethic
