Our Senior Environmental Scientists protect, enhance and maintain the natural ecosystems, environments and natural qualities we love about Tairawhiti Gisborne. We provide specialist technical expertise to ensure quality decision making for policy development, plan making, reporting, consenting and compliance matters.
We deliver regional state of the environment monitoring programmes, procure research, and undertake science projects to increase our knowledge base of natural ecosystems and environments.
We want to hear from you if you:
Seek a job that has a good mix of field (outdoor) and office work.
Have technical or specialist expertise in any of these sciences: soils, ecology, geology, biodiversity, coastal-marine science, land/catchment management, earth sciences, natural hazards, or other natural science field.
Can demonstrate extensive experience with procuring research and science, contract management and the associated financial responsibilities.
Have a deep desire to protect, enhance, and maintain our beautiful natural ecosystems, environments and land/seascapes (e.g. beaches, rivers, biodiversity, etc).
Enjoy spending your days doing science projects, delivering state of environment monitoring programmes, and acting as a mentor and peer reviewer for others.
Thrive on increasing knowledge and understanding of our natural places and spaces and sharing this technical expertise with those who need it for quality decision making.
Are a confident public speaker with experience speaking to a range of audiences.

You'll recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and understand how that underpins Gisborne District Council's work.
Nga Mahi nga Takohanga Matua ranei | Duties include:
Provide high-quality and credible technical reports on natural ecosystems, environments and the management of natural resources.
Deliver our state of environment monitoring programmes and associated data analytics, spatial analysis and reporting writing.
Successfully plan, co-ordinate, and deliver research and science projects (this includes procurement, contract management and budgets).
Provide technical expertise and advice to support strategy, consenting, compliance, planning, and other units of Council.
Prepare and present papers, reports and presentations to Council meetings, public meetings and community groups.
Nga Pukenga me Nga Wheako e Hiahia ana | Skills and experience required:
A Masters or PhD degree in these sciences: soils, coastal, marine, ecology, biodiversity, land management, natural hazards or other natural sciences.
Minimum of 6 years experience in a scientist role.
Practical knowledge of relevant legislation: Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA 1991) and National Policy Statements, and Local Government Act.
Proven procurement and contract management experience.
Experience in dealing with the public and tangata whenua.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Highly competent in data analysis and spatial analysis skills.
