The Chief Ombudsman works with his staff to help New Zealanders in their dealings with government agencies. The focus is on handling complaints against government agencies, undertaking investigations and inspections, and encouraging good administration. The Chief Ombudsman is independent and impartial, with the goal of fairness for all.

Mo to matou tira – About the team
This role sits within the Information and Knowledge team. We are a well established team of experts, consisting of information management and data analyst practitioners and experts. We collaborate to lead and develop information management best practice, and provide digital solutions to information management problems which support data driven decisions at the Office of the Ombudsman. We work closely with stakeholders to lead and support our information and data management centre of excellence.

Mo te turanga - About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Information and Knowledge Management, the Senior Data Analyst role works closely with stakeholders to understand requirements, provide advice and recommendations, and build dashboards in QlikSense supporting the delivering of analytics, reporting and data capabilities across a wide range of tasks and projects.

To support us through a busy period, we are looking for a passionate data and insights expert with strong stakeholder engagements skills who can hit the grounds running and embed themselves in the data hub. No two days are ever the same, but will include:

Extracting, preparing and manipulating data for modelling, analytics and insights, including creating data pipelines using QlikSense and Posit

Managing stakeholder relationships and expectations, as well as effectively communicating initiatives and progress to relevant business users

Contribute to Office wide projects with a data component, such as Maori Data Sovereignty

Mentoring the Data Analysts and promoting learning opportunities

The term of this fixed term role is for 6 months.

He korero mou – About you
To be successful in this role you will have:

Tertiary qualification in statistics or a related discipline and / or proven industry experience

Between 3-5 years of experience in data analytics, including programming in SQL and Python

Proven experience in data visualisation tools, such as QlikSense, PowerBI or Tableau

Experience in building relationships and managing specialist stakeholders

Background in public administration and/or a good understanding/experience with public sector operations

Good working knowledge of legislative and policy requirements that affect the management of data and insights in the public sector

Previous experience of managing security of sensitive and personal information and knowledge in an environment that requires high levels of confidentiality and security; with good working knowledge of relevant legislation and best practice principles.

Experience and understanding of data and insights and where, and how, this fits as part of an organisation's strategies, work programmes and activities, and as an enabler to improved outcomes in terms of value, quality and volume.

Depending on skills and experience the salary is expected to be between $103,529 to $135,882 with $129,411 being the mid-point.
