Senior Biosecurity Officer | Marine & FreshwaterPosted: 12/12/2024Closing Date: 12/01/2025Job Type: Permanent - Full TimeKey Responsibilities:Help create a framework ensuring protection of marine & freshwater ecosystems.Apply a strategic, planning and operational implementation skill set.Build our Marine and Freshwater biosecurity programmes and protect our region.Environment Canterbury is currently building our Marine and Freshwater Biosecurity programmes to manage the current and future risks our marine and freshwater ecosystems face.You'll be actively involved in creating, reviewing, and implementing a future framework to manage biosecurity risks related to marine and freshwater ecosystems.As a key Advisor, you will work alongside industry, Runanga, Territorial Authorities, central government, and other Regional Councils to protect Aotearoa's Marine and Freshwater ecosystems, ensuring Waitaha is doing its part to manage these ecosystems and ensure the best outcomes.Your work will help ensure the protection of our Marine and Freshwater biodiversity, access to Kai Moana, and increase community understanding of our environment while protecting the infrastructure that enables our economy.Reporting to the Team Leader Regional Biodiversity and Biosecurity, this newly created role will be responsible for recommending actions and tools to protect our marine and freshwater ecosystems from biological threats.This role will involve planning, recommendations, risk management, tools, and actions of the programme.
Your knowledge of legislative frameworks, key relationship management, pest management, and funding management will be key to the success of this role.Minimum Requirements:Relevant degree and a minimum of 7 years' experience in a similar role with a high degree of autonomy.Knowledge of strategic planning and operational implementation, procuring services, and managing contracts.Familiarity with marine and freshwater ecosystems and understanding of associated legislation.Excellent communication skills with a positive attitude, capable of delivering across various groups and mediums.Understanding of te ao Maori and confidence in engaging with partners under Te Tiriti.Our values underpin everything we do.
