Job Title: Animal Welfare InspectorRole type: PermanentLocation: AucklandSalary Range: $72,795 to $102,356 depending on skills and experiencePriority will be given to staff members with affected status.Korero mo te Turanga - About the RoleAs an Animal Welfare Inspector, you will be expected to deliver a range of work to ensure animal welfare complaints are managed appropriately.You will require sound legislative knowledge, good problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills. Each day will provide variety, as you work both in an office and in the field, meeting new people every day, while making a difference in ensuring all aspects of animal welfare compliance across Aotearoa New Zealand.In this role you will be:Ensuring investigation processes and procedures are followedManaging animal welfare complaints in the primary production sectorPreparing prosecution files where requiredMonitoring production animal facilities for compliance with animal welfare legislationWorking with other Animal Welfare Inspectors to prepare and present robust prosecution cases where non-compliance is identifiedPromoting good animal welfare practicesBuilding and sustaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including MPI Legal, Investigations, and other sector compliance teams as well as SPCA and NZ PoliceHaving practical working knowledge of relevant legislation to investigation and compliance activitiesHaving experience in leading or supporting investigations in a compliance environment is desirableHolding statutory appointments under both Animal Welfare and NAIT legislationSupporting MPI's response capability during adversity, civil defense, and emergency situationsMou - About YouTo be successful in this role you will have:A willingness to work with animals including lifestyle, production, and veterinary servicesA willingness and understanding of the requirement of humane euthanasia and being comfortable physically performing humane euthanasia of animals where necessaryKnowledge of farming practices, organisations, and external animal welfare agenciesPractical working knowledge or the potential to develop knowledge of relevant legislation under which investigations and compliance activities operate including: NAIT Act, Animal Welfare Act, Evidence Act, Criminal Disclosure Act, Criminal Procedures Act, Search and Surveillance ActRelevant Tertiary Qualification and/or equivalent regulatory, compliance, and enforcement experience would be an advantageAn expectation of regular travel in and outside of the Auckland regionYou do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply.We offer:A breadth of development and learning opportunitiesUp to three additional (MPI holidays) leave daysCareer development and internal opportunities across our directorate, business unit, and MPI wideFree annual flu vaccinationEmployee Assistance Programme (counselling support)Wa Mahi Ngawari - Flexible WorkingWe support flexible working arrangements and are happy to discuss these options with you.Nga Taki Whakahaumaru - Security checksLow level Security Clearance:Most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided continuously in NZ for at least the last five (5) years, ORIs a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA)And has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.Additional RequirementsThe successful applicant must have or be able to obtain a NZ Firearms licence and either feel comfortable safely carrying, using, and storing a firearm and captive bolt as part of your role.Please note, given this position is safety sensitive, the preferred applicant/s for the position will be required to undergo a drug and alcohol pre-employment screening test.Application ProcessIn your cover letter, we'd like to know about you, your values; your interest and motivations for this role; the abilities, strengths, personal attributes, and diverse perspectives you will bring to the role and this organisation.To view the position description and/or apply online, please click APPLY FOR THIS JOB or visit the MPI Careers Site.
