Korero mo te Turanga - About the Role As an Animal Welfare Inspector, you will be expected to deliver a range of work to ensure animal welfare complaints are managed appropriately.

You will require sound legislative knowledge, good problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills. Each day will provide variety, as you work both in an office and in the field, meeting new people every day, while making a difference in ensuring all aspects of animal welfare compliance across Aotearoa New Zealand.

In this role you will be: Ensuring investigation processes and procedures are followed Managing animal welfare complaints in the primary production sector Preparing prosecution files where required Monitoring production animal facility for compliance with animal welfare legislation. Working with other Animal Welfare Inspectors to prepare and present robust prosecution cases where non-compliance is identified Promoting good animal welfare practices Building and sustaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including MPI Legal, Investigations and other sector compliance teams as well as SPCA and NZ Police. Having practical working knowledge of relevant legislation to investigation and compliance activities Having experience in leading or supporting investigations in a compliance environment is desirable. Hold statutory appointments under both Animal Welfare and NAIT legislation. Support MPI's response capability during adversity, civil defence, and emergency situations. Mou - About You To be successful in this role you will have: Willingness to work with animals including lifestyle, production, and veterinary services. Willingness and understanding of the requirement of humane euthanasia and being comfortable physically performing humane euthanasia of animals where necessary. Knowledge of farming practices, organisations, and external animal welfare agencies. Practical working knowledge or be able to demonstrate the potential to develop knowledge of relevant legislation under which investigations and compliance activities operate including: NAIT Act, Animal Welfare Act, Evidence Act, Criminal Disclosure Act, Criminal Procedures Act, Search and Surveillance Act. Relevant Tertiary Qualification and/or equivalent regulatory, compliance, and enforcement experience would be an advantage. Expectation of regular travel in and outside of the Auckland region. Low level Security Clearance Most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided continuously in NZ for at least the last five (5) years, OR Is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK), or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

The successful applicant must have or be able to obtain a NZ Firearms licence and either feel comfortable safely carrying, using, and storing a firearm and captive bolt as part of your role.

Please note, given this position is safety-sensitive the preferred applicant/s for the position will be required to undergo a drug and alcohol pre-employment screening test.
