The Office of the Chief Justice | Te Tari Toko i te Tumu Whakawa (Te Tari), supports the independent judicial branch of government and the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, and Chief Judge of the High Court, in their leadership and administrative responsibilities.We are seeking a Senior Advisor, Legal and Judicial Administration, who will report to the Chief Justice's Chief Legal and Policy Advisor. This new role is to ensure that the core judicial administrative functions that are carried out in support of and on behalf of, the Chief Justice and the judiciary, are discharged lawfully and accurately. This role will provide oversight and guidance over the various administrative processes and ensure they are legally accurate, that those responsible for undertaking the tasks have the necessary advice, knowledge and information to perform their roles to the required standard and resolve any specific legal or policy issues related to core judicial administration.You will be working closely with the Chief Justice and other members of the senior judiciary to ensure any legal or policy issues relating to core judicial administration are properly resolved.The Senior Advisor also assists the Chief Legal and Policy Advisor in providing high level legal, policy and strategic advice to the Chief Justice in her role as head of the judiciary. The delivery of this advice may be directly to the Chief Justice or indirectly through judicial committees, other judges and the Office of the Chief Justice. This advice extends to the assessment and options in response to law reform proposals that may impact the courts or judiciary and on the legal and policy information issues that arise as a consequence of the institutional relationship between the courts and the Ministry of Justice.The Senior Advisor reports to the Chief Legal and Policy Advisor but will undertake work for other areas in Te Tari as directed. They will also be expected to deputise as the Chief Legal and Policy Advisor during their absence or unavailability in respect of legal and policy issues that arise.No candidate will meet every single desired qualification. If your experience looks a little different from what we have outlined and believe you can bring value to the role, we'd love to hear from you!Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and ability to hold a practising certificate.Technical SkillsConsiderable and proven experience in the provision of high level and complex legal, law reform and policy advice.Comprehensive understanding of the separation of powers and in particular of the judicial arm of government.Knowledge and understanding of information governance in the context of the courts.Demonstrated ability to achieve goals and work under pressure.Able to build and maintain positive stakeholder relationships and effective networks across and within organisations.Excellent relationship management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise with a wide range of people.Ability to successfully organise work, prioritise, meet deadlines, maintain accuracy and confidentiality.Ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences on complex issues.Considerable and proven experience in the provision of high level and complex legal, law reform and policy advice, including the preparation of guidance material and manuals.Significant experience working in a high-paced environment (government department or equivalent) at a senior level, where you are required to influence and respond to changing needs and priorities in the legal, policy context.Experience working with senior managers.The Office of the Chief Justice | Te Tari Toko i te Tumu Whakawa (Te Tari), supports the independent judicial arm of government. It supports the Chief Justice, President of the Court of Appeal, and Chief Judge of the High Court, in their leadership and administrative responsibilities.Legal and Policy supports the Chief Justice on legal, policy and constitutional matters.
