The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) is New Zealand's national search and rescue organisation and is responsible for coordinating all major maritime and aviation search & rescue missions within New Zealand's Search and Rescue Region (SRR); and land-based missions arising from someone activating a distress beacon.
Te tunga | The role As a SARO, you will coordinate, manage and direct responses to search and rescue (SAR) incidents. Working as members of a small team, SAROs provide year-round operational coverage on a 24/7 rotating shift system. Outside of the watch role, you will be involved in key initiatives such as assistance for SAR services provided by other agencies and undertaking development, liaison, and training delivery activities in New Zealand and the wider Pacific.
If successful, you will be initially employed on a fixed-term basis as a Training SARO. We offer a comprehensive and in-depth training programme for the first 12 weeks where you will receive support and encouragement every step of the way. On successful completion of the training programme, you will become a permanent employee and move into the SARO role.
Minimum Requirements: Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills;Aptitude to assimilate information quickly from a range of technology;Strong communication skills, remaining calm and focused under pressure;Collaborative and committed to teamwork.Additionally, it would be great for you to have: Experience or a keen interest in using aeronautical maps and/or marine charts;Knowledge of New Zealand and Pacific geography through your personal experience or interests;Experience in Search and Rescue/emergency management on a voluntary or professional basis;Relevant qualifications in either land, maritime or aviation applications or another qualification that shows your thirst for learning more.Maritime NZ recognises and respects te Tiriti o Waitangi and we are committed to working with Maori to build strong, meaningful and enduring relationships to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. The initial salary for the training period of three months is $85,079 and on successfully completing the training and becoming permanent, the salary goes to $87,384 plus a roster allowance of $14,603 once you start working shifts.
