Waitaha - our Canterbury region - is like no other and we are proud to call it home. We are privileged to work with Papatipu Runanga, stakeholders, and our wider community to protect our environment, including water, land and air through regulation and planning. As a Regional Council we're responsible for flood protection, public transport, civil defence, and more.
Together we're taking action to shape a thriving and resilient Canterbury, now and for future generations. Toitu te marae o Tane, toitu te marae o Tangaroa, toitu te tangata | if the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.
In the role, you'll work closely with our multi-skilled teams of scientists to address challenging issues. You'll support our science monitoring work by gathering, analysing, and processing data. This role will also have elements of interpreting soil data, preparing environmental reports, and providing technical advice to other parts of the business. The role will see you experiencing our diverse region by undertaking fieldwork and investigations.
Our vision is to deliver the right science, at the right time and in the right way for the benefit of our communities and the environment.
You'll ideally have a master's degree in a relevant field, or a bachelor's degree plus relevant years of professional experience. Your solid technical background will stand out as you interpret scientific data and tell the science story.
The ability to learn our existing processes and share knowledge will be a key asset, as you provide guidance and advice to the business on our scientific processes. The technical nature of the role requires excellent attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Along with the following:
Strong knowledge of soil science or environmental science, with a good understanding of nutrient cycling and transport processes in agriculture.
Understanding of data storage, data management, and quality assurance.
Computer and programming skills using a range of software including databases, spreadsheets, statistical and graphics applications, GIS (preferably ArcGIS Pro).
Knowledge of and comfort with Matauranga Maori.
You will be confident working with stakeholders including public groups and colleagues to define research questions and provide sound advice on a range of technical scientific data.
The indicative salary range for this role is $74,306 – $91,789 per annum depending on skills and experience. Permanent full-time 40 hours per week located at 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch.
Our values underpin everything we do. We understand and embrace a diverse workforce and it's this diversity that will enable us to better serve our people, our community, and our greatest taonga, the environment. We value everyone's contribution, diverse thinking, and skills.
We're on a journey to become a treaty partner of excellence which includes incorporating te ao Maori into our work. We offer supportive opportunities to develop capability in this area and encourage our people to use kaupapa Maori, Matauranga Maori and te reo Maori in our daily work. We welcome you with an open heart & mind, wherever you are on your personal te ao Maori journey.
