Mo te tunga | About the role You will join our Space Effects research team where you will work on space-based navigation systems and electronic warfare. You will work on upgrades to our ground-based space infrastructure as we conduct research using our on-orbit satellite payloads. You will quickly find yourself developing specialised positioning, navigation and timing test equipment, updating our remote ground station, and improving our space observatory. You will also actively participate in the development of software components needed to integrate your work with other systems, and work closely with the armed forces as we transition the best technology from R&D into military capability.
This is a rewarding position offering opportunities for personal and professional growth through established partnerships with national and international academic institutions, commercial organisations and government agencies. The role must be based at Devonport Naval Base and due to system access requirements, there is minimal opportunity to work from home. Flexible hours/days are negotiable. Occasional travel is required.

Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and Experience You may not have deep expertise in the specific areas we are researching and formal training on satellite systems, satellite navigation and defence-related areas will be available. Core skills we are looking for in graduates, or experienced engineers, is a sound technical understanding of signal processing or Radio Frequency (RF) electronics.
You will also have applied these skills via a substantive academic project or within industry. A practical mind-set, a positive attitude and motivation to contribute to New Zealand's defence and security in the space domain is also essential. We would like to hear from you if you fit this profile, even if you have applied previously.
Essential Skills and Experience: A degree in Electronic Engineering or related degree is required for this role, or a closely aligned foundation subject (e.g. Physics) with proven experience in signal processing or RF electronics.
Demonstrated skills in either RF engineering, electronics engineering, Software Defined Radio programming, signal processing or a closely related field.
Demonstrated ability to develop software (Python, C or C++ preferred).
Ability to create scripts and maintain a Linux system for experimentation and scientific tooling.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to engage with internal and external clients at all levels.
Knowledge/skills/experience in some of the following areas on entry would be an advantage:
A relevant post-graduate qualification.
Electronic Warfare.
Collaborative software development (e.g. Git).
Containerisation technology (e.g. Docker).
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques.
Field and lab-based experimentation.
Basic workshop and electrical skills (e.g. soldering, drilling, cutting).
Additive manufacture.
