The role will see you efficiently navigate diverse and often opposing viewpoints to pinpoint and distil the scientific requirements of the programme.
This is a national focussed position that will carry a high degree of public scrutiny.
It requires political awareness and someone who is confident to engage with national and international scientists to support successful delivery on the ground.The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing scientific advice, delivering research, and influencing others to achieve impactful outcomes for threatened species, pest control, and ecosystem conservation.The position will be focussed on:Provide scientific advice on wild animals, specifically ungulates including all species of deer, tahr, chamois, goats and pigs.Establish connections with New Zealand and international research providers, including Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research and Universities.Develop a Wild Animal research plan in collaboration with stakeholders across the sector.Lead investigations into prioritised operational research, such as understanding ungulate densities for biodiversity outcomes, improving control tools, and enhancing detection methods.Collaborate closely with internal DOC colleagues to support delivery.Ideally, we would prefer the position to be based out of Christchurch, Wellington, or Hamilton, but will consider other locations for the right candidate.
