About the opportunity We have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Research Engineer / Research Engineer to join the team on a permanent basis at our Fonterra Research and Development Centre in Palmerston North.
The purpose of this role is to conduct and deliver supervised research underpinning the production of sustained commercial value for Fonterra.
You'll partake in executing research strategy and assist with research tactics to deliver against the research and/or operation investment strategy of the business. Supporting quality Technology and engineering outputs in new product development projects, new technology Breakthrough projects and business support. This will include discussions of judgement calls on the relative value of research activities, contributing to determination of person research effort .
In this role you will have the opportunity to collaborate with world class engineers, scientists and technologists within FRDC and from different parts of Fonterra both within NZ and globally. You will benefit from access to a world class Pilot Plant facility and, as part of a research team, get to see your work through to commercial outcomes. Working across Milkfat, Cheese, Cream & Process cheese related R&D projects and get exposure to Fonterra's vast manufacturing business.
Key responsibilities include: Focus on Dairy Foods and Food Service R&D projects, you will provide engineering inputs and support a research team deliver laboratory, pilot plant and full-scale trials. Develop research methods and report findings alongside other engineers and scientists. Interpret research findings and develop a working knowledge of research literature. Actively develop your engineering skills with the aim of progressing towards a senior research role via experiences within projects, on the job training and formal research training. Contribute to a team of research engineers and advocate for Dairy Science approaches and solutions You will actively communicate and collaborate with teams within R&D as well as Manufacturing and Marketing. About you A passion for R&D. Regardless of experience, a deep interest in scientific thinking and methodology, a positive attitude, a willingness to learn quickly, and an ability to work within cross-functional teams is a must. You will be a team player and enjoy the debate and breadth of thought and experiences that come from working in teams.
You quickly find common ground and solve problems while offering insights and solutions for improvements. You'll have creative ideas, good research credentials and processing knowledge. Most of all, you are ready to develop as an engineer and wanting a career in R&D.
You will also have: An undergraduate degree in chemical, Process, material, mechanical or related engineering discipline. A post graduate level qualification (Ph.D./ Masters) would be preferred. Experience working in with an R&D environment and exposure to mixing and blending technology.
Few other key attributes will be: Practical R&D experience within related industries or academia Exposure to commercial manufacture is ideal but not required – understanding of highly viscous fluid manufacturing technologies is desirable Resilience and the ability to share your ideas with others and a great team player Stakeholder management and relationship building skills across research teams, commercial contacts and external provider Strong passion and interest in Research and Development Our Story Whanaungatanga, our Co-operative spirit gives us all a common strength and purpose.
