Want to be part of a team where the core focus is understanding native fish populations throughout the region, identifying barriers to their migration and implementing actions that will result in barrier removal? All while being part of an organisation recognised for our expertise, innovation, science and leadership? Then we have the job for you as a part of the Jobs for Nature fish passage project, co-funded through the Ministry for the Environment.
This Research Assistant - Fish Passage and Monitoring | Kaiawhina Rangahau Arotururki Ara Ika position is fixed term until 30 June 2025 and based at Kairanga, near Palmerston North. The role will be a mixture of field based and office work throughout the Horizons Region. Day to day field work will involve stream walking to find and record barriers to fish migration, and delivering solutions to remediate them. Additional field work will involve monitoring of fish, koura, and kakahi populations. Office work will involve the prioritisation and design of fish barrier remediations, planning and reporting on our findings.
About you  You will need to work with land owners, barrier owners, iwi/hapu, agencies and groups to be part of a high performing team implementing projects designed to understand and increase native fish numbers. Excellent communication and relationship building skills will be vital as the team works with a wide range of internal and external project partners and stakeholders to deliver projects on the ground, across the region. 
You will need to have a passion for working in the outdoors in all weather conditions, be confident around waterways, and solutions focused. Ideally you will have an interest in the regions native fish and an ability to uphold the values of Te Tiriti O Waitangi. A full drivers' license is essential, experience with four wheel drive vehicles and use of GIS is preferred. Good interpersonal, communication, report writing and organizational skills are essential.
