The mission of the Southland Hospital General Medicine service is to deliver excellent patient care and at the same time facilitate the development of outstanding Registrars.
Do you want the opportunity to nurture any subspecialty interests? We cover the wide range of medicine specialties, including diabetes and endocrinology, respiratory, renal, and much more.
Consultants work alongside our Registrars to provide patient-focused care and high-quality teaching.
We handle thousands of inpatient and outpatient encounters every year.
Do you want to be within a short drive of some of New Zealand's most famous national parks and ski fields and surrounded by beautiful coastal settings?
Mo te turanga | About the role
Fully staffed with trained General Physicians, many of whom are also qualified in various subspecialties.
Medical patients are admitted to General Medicine, ensuring excellent breadth and depth of exposure to a wide range of medical conditions.
Opportunity for exposure to ambulatory work within the onsite subspecialties provided by the dual trained General Physicians, which include Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Nephrology and Gastroenterology.
We maintain the care for acutely unwell patients including those requiring ICU admission, which means that advanced trainees can satisfy the high acuity requirement of their training by doing General Medicine at Southland, rather than having to do a separate high acuity run.
All other medical subspecialties are covered by visiting consultants from Dunedin Hospital. There is ample time and opportunity to nurture any subspecialty interests amongst trainees alongside their General Medicine experience.
We offer a clinically challenging and busy yet supportive environment for you to thrive.
Minimum Requirements
Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council's website at www.mcnz.org.nz
Whilst we are interested in receiving applications from those with Medical Registrar experience, RMOs with a minimum of one year's post-qualification experience and good exposure to general medical runs can apply.
It is a requirement of the Medical Council of New Zealand that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand, it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion.
