Mo te tunga | About the role

When you work with the Health NZ Te Whatu Ora, you are part of something very special. We plan, fund and deliver health services to the almost 600,000 people that live in the Canterbury region. Our primary goal is to put people at the heart of everything we do.

The Team: What we do

Health NZ Waitaha Canterbury's Community Dental Service provides dental services to nearly 90,000 children aged 0-13 in Canterbury and South Canterbury and supports our colleagues on the West Coast. There are 110 front-line clinical staff who work with modern equipment in 22 mobile dental units and 13 dental clinics.

When children commence their secondary school education their oral health care is provided by private dentists. This full time, permanent Regional Coordinator role supports and coordinates the transfer of children to their new provider and promotion of oral care across the community. The Regional Coordinator is integral to the success of our service by supporting students to enrol and attend dental appointments, ensuring ongoing participation of all adolescents, particularly those in at risk groups.

The Role: Where you fit in

In this role, you will be responsible for:

Coordinating oral health promotion initiatives to ensure that adolescents and their family/whanau are aware of the publicly-funded services that are available, and are actively participating in these services (e.g. enrolled with a dentist, attending annual oral health checks, etc.);

Planning and implementing strategies to actively address inequities of access, ensuring that all adolescents including at risk groups have equal opportunity to participate in oral health care services;

Contributing to other oral health promotion activities engaged in by Community Dental Services.

Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and experience

Your skills will include:

The ability to build rapport with consumers and their family/whanau, Maori and Pacifica organisations as well as developing and nurturing relationships with education providers and other oral health services;

Developing links with local Maori and Pacific health providers to improve the uptake and participation in oral health services by Maori and Pacific adolescents, and endeavouring to incorporate Maori and Pacific principles/tikanga into the coordination services;

Experience working with adolescents, and the ability to relate well to this age group;

Intermediate Excel skills to support information handling and data analysis;

Proven experience in producing written work, including developing business/service plans to a high standard;

Relevant tertiary qualification (for example: public health, health promotion, oral health).
