Regional Adviser, Maori Agribusiness (Climate and Water) | Whakatane Job Title: Regional Adviser, Climate & Water
Role type : 12-month fixed term | Secondment
Start Date: Early February 2025
Location : MPI Office based in the Bay of Plenty
General Salary Range D: $98,955 - $132,427 per annum depending on skills and experience.
(Salary midpoint for this position is $115,691 per annum)
We are seeking a Regional Adviser to join our Maori Agribusiness directorate on a 12-month fixed term contract, starting in early February 2025. This directorate sits within the Maori Partnerships and Investment (MP&I) business unit, and works with Maori to realise cultural, social, environmental, and economic outcomes by facilitating growth of Maori primary sector assets.
The Climate and Water Team's purpose is to support Maori agribusinesses to identify, develop, and implement innovative, scalable, and culturally appropriate greenhouse gas emission reduction solutions, enhance food and fibre production system resilience to climate change, and improve overall sustainability.
Regional kaiarahi advisory roles will include working on the design, development and delivery of pilot projects to achieve this purpose, working closely with regional experts and consultancies, to support and advise Maori agribusinesses with their projects. As a Regional Adviser, you will facilitate conversations with Maori whenua businesses to assess funding options, form funding proposals and draft contracts using best practice.
You will also provide analysis and advice to the Ministry on emerging and future issues, and opportunities & risks, concerning Maori primary sector economic development. This is a unique opportunity to partner with Maori, iwi, and hapu to achieve better outcomes for their economic development.
You may currently be working in the primary sector, on the marae, within the science and climate change communities, or working within taiao units of hapu or iwi organisations. You will have strong communication and engagement skills and will be passionate about delivering projects led by groups' tikanga and matauranga.
Relationship management and sector experience will be key to success in this role, so the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a combination of strong interpersonal skills, an ability to communicate complex technical issues, and develop innovative solutions.
You will draw on your experience to enrich your work by using tikanga Maori and te reo Maori principles to facilitate engagement processes and to effectively present information to different groups. You'll understand primary sector operating systems but will be supported with training to further develop your subject matter expertise in the field of agricultural emissions and mitigation options.
To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
Experience working in the primary sector or related industry or science-based organisation.
Experience of applying a range of generalist and specialist skills including relationship management, project management and contracts management to deliver a range of functions.
Experience and knowledge of tikanga Maori and Te Reo Maori principles to facilitate consultation processes and to effectively present information to different Maori groups.
Well-developed organisational skills with ability to think ahead, prioritise and plan appropriately.
Ability to identify and develop effective working relationships with people from all levels of an organisation and community.
Methodical approach to problem solving with strong attention to detail.
You will be based in one of our Bay of Plenty offices which include Whakatane, Tauranga or Rotorua. You will report to the Manager Climate and Water, and work with a supportive team of Advisers based in Hamilton, New Plymouth, Whakatane, Palmerston North and Wellington. There will be travel required at times around the Bay of Plenty region, to connect with our partners, regional teams and attend industry events.
