About the role As Ranger / Project Lead Biodiversity and Community, you will lead the delivery of key biodiversity work on the Chatham Islands. This includes engaging with landowners and other conservation stakeholders to ensure the effective achievement of conservation outcomes on private land. This role requires someone who is proactive, adaptable, and enjoys fostering relationships within a community-focused setting. The position will be focused on: Providing advice on planning, prioritising, updating and reporting on island biosecurity work programmes. Navigating systems and processes, ensuring health and safety compliance. Leading district audits of island biosecurity performance. Supporting the team in establishing networks with iwi to ensure effective collaboration in the delivery of conservation work on the island. Supporting the Principal Ranger in developing and maintaining systems to monitor staff and volunteers. Skills and experience If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you: Contract management experience. Practical community engagement skills and experience. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with iwi and community groups. A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Ecology, Zoology or Biosecurity) or equivalent expertise gained from experience. Able to use day-to-day tikanga at work, e.g. waiata and pepeha. Experience in leading project teams, managing contracts, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Reasonable level of physical fitness. Proficiency in using various computer software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Tech-savvy with a comfortable ability to navigate systems and processes. Understanding of health and safety systems and processes. Full New Zealand Driver's License. Desirable: Current First Aid Certificate. Experience in quarantine, surveillance, and incursion response. Firearms Licence. Bird banding and handling qualifications. LUV unit standards. 4x4 unit standards. About the team The Rekohu / Wharekauri / Chatham Islands Wairarapa District Team are based in Masterton and Chatham Islands. Given that 30% of New Zealand's threatened species are found on the Chathams, the team has a focus on a broad range of biodiversity programmes managing threatened bird and plant species and increasing habitat through restoration and revegetation. The work of the District has a large biodiversity focus monitoring, managing and protecting threatened species, as well as maintaining our recreation and historic assets. Our Treaty Partners are integral to our work here. The current local Treaty Settlement space is active. Moriori have recently had their Treaty Settlement enacted and an Agreement in Principle was signed recently with Ngati Mutunga o Wharekauri. What's in it for you?
