Position Overview The Kaitiaki, Ranger (Heritage and Visitor) is a crucial operational role within the close-knit Tongariro District Team. This role involves maintaining and improving recreation facilities at front country sites and back country sites, including walking tracks, structures, camping areas, and accommodation sites. You may also support the Biodiversity and Community teams as needed on tasks related to pest control and/or community conservation projects.
Your day-to-day work will be field-based but will include some office work to support the field work and team. The role involves regular overnight trips to backcountry locations of between 2 to 5 days long per trip or as required to fulfil the busy maintenance program. Some of these trips are planned and some are at short notice. When working on any overnight trips extra allowances are paid.
Key Responsibilities Maintain tracks and facilities visitor assets at some of the Central North Island's most iconic sites, including Tongariro National Park.
Initiate continuous improvements at sites and facilities.
Resolve issues independently through research and initiative.
Manage changing priorities at short notice.
Communicate effectively with the community and volunteers at key sites.
Collaborate with team members and demonstrate emotional intelligence.
Plan, organize, and administer fieldwork effectively.
Maintain a reasonable level of physical fitness for fieldwork, including carrying equipment and materials.
Minimum Requirements NZ Class 1 drivers' licence.
Willingness to be trained in chainsaw and weed eater operation, Grow Safe Certification, First Aid Certification, tramping or backcountry skills, basic firefighting training, four-wheel drive unit standards, and light utility vehicle (LUV) unit standards.
Basic DIY, carpentry, landscaping, and building skills.
About the Team The Regional Operations Group is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our Biodiversity, Heritage and Visitor, Community Engagement, and Visitor Centre teams. The Central North Island team places a strong emphasis on looking after one another and values social connection.
