Two Full time, 10-month secondment opportunities based in the Waiau / Franz Josef Office.

About the role We are seeking two motivated and skilled rangers to join our Biodiversity team to assist and support delivery of in-situ kiwi monitoring during the predator eradication undertaken as part of the Predator Free South Westland (PFSW) project.
These exciting roles will be focused on gathering survivorship and breeding data of Rowi kiwi and helping to understand what natural survivorship looks like for this species in a predator free environment.
Your duties in this role will include: catching, banding and fitting transmitters to kiwi health checks on adult and juvenile kiwi tracking and monitoring rowi kiwi and chick survival in the field through using telemetry and thorough observations setting and checking trail cameras, and reviewing footage data collection and data entry.
At times you may be required to stay away overnight and work outside normal hours.
You may also assist the Biodiversity team and the wider district with other duties.
Skills and experience You will be a self-starter and motivated individual who has a passion for achieving conservation outcomes.
We want to hear from you if you have: practical experience in the field, backcountry and rugged terrain in all weather conditions strong navigation, map reading and GPS skills the ability to work well alone, with teams, and work with a wide range of people including scientists, iwi and the local community ability to live and work in a small community, spending time away in remote field locations strong health and safety focus as well as a high level of physical fitness experience using transmitters and tracking wildlife using telemetry excellent verbal and written communication attention to detail to ensure accurate data collection and record keeping tech savvy skills and ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite and databases understanding of research methods and an ability to adapt as we learn strong initiative and a high degree of self-motivation current full New Zealand driver licence experience using trail cameras.
Desirable skills, experience, and qualifications: Kiwi Handling accreditations.
Relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience in wildlife management or conservation.
Data analysis and report writing skills.
Experience handling and monitoring birds including banding, and undertaking behavioural observations.
Current First Aid Certificate.
About the team There is shared DOC accommodation available in Franz Josef if required.
