We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by Te reo Maori, Te ao Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.He angitutanga | About the roleApplications are now open for our seasonal Biodiversity Monitoring Ranger vacancies based in Hokitika, Invercargill, Rotorua and Palmerston North.These are full time, temporary positions, working on a roster of approx. 12 days on, 6 days off (40 hours per week average). The fixed term period for these roles is starting September 2024 to February 2025 with the potential of extending through to April 2025 depending on the mahi that may still be ongoing.You will collect biodiversity monitoring data from a wide range of sites and projects with a focus on DOC's national biodiversity monitoring programme. You will be part of a national team and may have responsibilities that extend beyond the location where you reside.The following weblinks provide some insights into the kind of work the team's field operations contribute to: are looking for people with a strong outdoor background, who we can train into the technical aspects of the roles if necessary.We are looking for enthusiastic Rangers with the following skills/experience:proven ability to operate in the backcountryproven ability to get on well with others in a small teamphysical fitness and ability to carry a full pack for three hours off-trackfield-based monitoring or research experienceability to regularly spend long periods of time (up to 2 weeks) away from homecurrent full New Zealand Drivers Licence is desirable.Specialist skills and experience within one or more of the following areas is desirable:extensive experience in 20 x 20 vegetation plotsbird identification, preferably 5-minute bird countsanimal pest monitoring, preferably ungulate pellet counts and possum monitoringsmall mammal index tracking tunnel monitoring experienceA tertiary qualification or equivalent experience and achievements in science or natural heritage managementThe Department of Conservation /Te Papa Atawhai places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow.
