About the role

The role of the Nga Awa River Ranger involves assisting with the protection and knowledge gathering for the Te Hoiere awa and the adjoining natural ecosystem. The Nga Awa Ranger is DOC's field representative for the Te Hoiere Nga Awa project (see: tehoiere.org.nz ). Their main duties will include monitoring biodiversity with a focus on the freshwater environment.

The Nga Awa Ranger will work closely with Tangata Whenua, Marlborough District Council staff, adjoining landowners, and other entities within the project. Responsibilities include creating goals influenced by the integrated catchment enhancement plan (see: tehoiere.org.nz/catchment-actions ). This is a full-time, fixed-term role opportunity until 30 May 2025, based in Renwick.

The day-to-day work will be strongly field-based but will include a mix of office work to support the role and team. Please refer directly to the applicant information sheet which provides more specific details about this role.

Ability to occasionally work away from home on scheduled work trips, which may involve staying overnight at remote work sites when practical.

Desirable qualifications / skills or willingness to be trained up to these standards:

Knowledge of aquatic flora and fauna species is highly desirable.

Electric fishing certification.

Proficient in the use of GPS and GIS.

First Aid Certification.

Four-wheel drive unit standards.

Team process training.

Te Pukenga Atawhai Certificate (or similar) and/or understanding of Maori cultural values.

Must have reasonable computer skills (at least proficient with the Microsoft suite: Excel, Word, and Outlook).

Must have a current NZ Class 1 driver's licence (minimum requirement: restricted licence and ideally able to drive a manual vehicle).
