This region receives the greatest number of sun hours in all of New Zealand. Furthermore, Nelson is close to the beach and is surrounded by a vast amount of nature. This makes outdoor activities very accessible. Nelson is the oldest city in the South Island and the second oldest in all of New Zealand. The city is also known for its local art. For example, the Nelson Arts Festival is organized every year, popular with both locals and tourists.
The position is offered by the mental health and addictions department. They provide care to nearly 150,000 people spread across the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough regions. They are home to four hospitals and several small-scale centres. Together with colleagues, you will provide the best care to addicts, and contribute to solving these complex issues.
On behalf of the above organisation, we are looking for a Psychiatrist or General Practitioner with experience in addiction care. This is a position within the addiction care team, preferably full-time. Should you be able to work other hours, this is also possible in consultation.
The suitable candidate will work in the team specialising in alcohol and drug addiction where they work a 1:9 rota on an on-call basis in addition to normal shifts. You will support the patients you treat with their addiction and the clinics mainly see patients with other care problems or opioid addiction. You will do this together with other psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists and social workers. There is also a lot of collaboration with other agencies involved in addiction care. Through these channels, you get patients referred or can refer patients further.
To apply, you must have registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Previous experience and a good command of English are required. In addition, you must have at least 3 years' experience in treating and managing medical complications related to addictions. This requires you to be and remain well informed about recent developments in the field of addiction care.
