Project Engineering Design Manager

Details of the offer

Lead a team of ~eight engineers, and outsourced design consultancies. Bring your drive for results, commercial approach, and customer centricity.
Ensure strategic objectives are met at the heart of the electricity sector.
Work across Transpower whilst guiding a diverse team working on multifaceted, future-focused engineering design projects. Our core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand - a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system. Our transmission network includes over 12,000km of transmission lines, 25,000 transmission towers and 170 substations - assets that are worth more than $5 billion and provide direct benefit to Aotearoa.
Our Grid Development division identifies and conveys future Grid needs up to 30 plus years ahead and develops transmission asset management strategies to meet our strategic objectives as outlined in Transmission Tomorrow and Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko.
Enquiries to connect to the Grid from generators, distributors, and end-users have doubled in the past three years and these projects are cheaper and faster to build than ever before. We are growing and scaling to ensure we can respond by offering connections faster and more efficiently.
About the team The Transmission Lines Projects Engineering teams within our broader Tactical Engineering and Estimation group work collaboratively to develop lines projects nationally, with a risk-based approach and emphasis on cost-optimisation and efficiency to ensure the grid requirements are met.
They are collectively responsible for engineering and asset management investigations, design, project support, technical specifications and cost estimation covering high voltage electricity transmission, specifically Transmission Lines, with a capital value of $300-$400m per annum. Solutions consider the needs of Protection and Automation, Substations, Asset Planning, and Operations.
The opportunity Based in our Waikoukou head office in Wellington, you'll lead ~8 engineers who provide project engineering support to the Asset Management Planning team, as well as developing and maintaining standards.
We have an outsourcing model for the design of projects. This approach requires astute management and guidance to ensure that the level of risk that Transpower takes on is balanced against project costs and, as a result, this position plays a key oversight role in projects which maximise value to Transpower.
You'll guide and lead others in the wider team, to achieve good outcomes for Transpower, clients, and ultimately New Zealand. You'll also support Senior Leaders in identifying and implementing new approaches, innovations, and technologies to drive savings and optimisation, along with improved safety outcomes through engineering design.
With a focus on resourcing and customer service, you'll enable your team to prioritise work and efficient delivery on our strategic priorities. We'll support and develop you to initiate and guide continuous improvement to pursue the delivery of an efficient engineering service that enables project delivery within schedule, budget, and quality parameters.
Ultimately, you'll enjoy varied future-focused work, and building intellectually stimulating relationships across Transpower and with our outsourced engineering design partners, customers, and stakeholders.
What will you bring? Outstanding people leadership skills and good strategic vision and experience determining and delivering the continuous improvements required in technical teams to meet future business needs.
Priorities and operational requirements can change quickly, so experience navigating and leading in a dynamic environment is a plus. Ideally, you'll be someone known for building teams where people are highly engaged and feel accountably empowered; where they are challenged, grow, and develop competency while maximising their strengths.
To be considered your career to-date, cover letter, and CV will demonstrate: A relevant Engineering Degree (mechanical, civil, electrical, or industrial are preferred), ideally with CPEng, or a post-graduate business management qualification.Experience in leading successful teams, including coaching, supervising, motivating, and developing people in an asset-centric, scaling/evolving business.Proven expertise in contract and project management, business strategy alignment, team goal setting, tracking, work prioritisation, and resource planning.Well-developed and concise verbal and written communication, including when conveying technical issues to non-technical audiences, or where technical leaders have varying viewpoints.Positive relationship management skills, including advocacy and influencing of key stakeholders, ideally in a fast-paced, engineering project design and delivery environment.Tactical engineering operates like an internal consultant or front-end engineering department. If your background includes engineering consultancy, distribution, or transmission with good exposure to engineering design, planning, and execution, you'll quickly have impact!
