At the heart of the electricity sector, Transpower proactively plans for the grid of the future that will connect new renewable energy projects and enable a transition to a net zero carbon economy.
Enquiries to connect to the Grid from generators, distributors, and end-users have doubled in the past three years and these projects are cheaper and faster to build than ever before.

About the teams The Substations Project Engineering team provides engineering design advice, expertise, and solutions that optimise performance, risk, and cost for New Zealand energy users.
Our team leads the technical work across the project lifecycle from research, optioneering, design, and delivery.We are currently working on over 120 substation projects, including 15 new greenfield substation builds, 7 Major Capital redevelopments, and over 35 primary systems replacement and refurbishment projects.About the Opportunity As the Asset Owner's engineer, you'll enjoy endless opportunities to utilise and extend your capability on the most engaging and interesting transmission projects across New Zealand.Based in Wellington or Auckland, you'll be supported and work on an interesting mix of design, economics, engineering, and problem solving.
You'll collaborate with project delivery and engineering consultants to investigate options and develop feasible solutions that enable faster grid connections, greater customer centricity, and deliver better value for our customers and New Zealanders.You'll play a key part in the design and decision-making process regarding what, and how work is carried out on the national grid.
The team is collaborative, offers stimulating the job learning, and you'll gain both exposure to the wider business and deep knowledge of the transmission system.
What will you bring?
We are keen to hear from you if you're an inquisitive engineer with a degree in electrical/power engineering or an equivalent tertiary qualification.To be shortlisted, your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate: Understanding of electricity transmission and distribution technology and theory.Project Engineering experience with transmission and distribution Substations or similar installations.Excellent analytical skills.Well-developed verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships and networks.Competence in the use of Microsoft Office business software applications.While not essential - one or more of the following will be highly regardedDetailed understanding of plant and equipment used in Transmission and distribution substations.Understanding of protection and secondary systems.Experience in civil and/or electrical projects, possibly including construction, estimating, project management, etc.Familiarity with specialist engineering software, such as AutoCAD, and tools for power system analysis (load flow, short-circuit, etc), earth grid design, and cable rating.Join us at Transpower!
