The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust is a registered charity formed in 1987 to protect the hoiho by restoring their natural environment. In coastal areas along Te Waipounamu, Trustees purchased pastures to convert to native forest. Volunteers eco-sourced seeds and cultivated up to 15,000 native plants per annum.
In recent years, several major threats have affected the hoiho population. The current hoiho management programme works to build resilience through nature-based solutions and intervention based on science.
