Fishing & Aquaculture (Farming, Animals & Conservation)Join our senior operational leadership team to support NIWA's land-based Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS), where you will be responsible for meeting production targets and premium quality outputs for a developing global marketplace.NIWA is a dynamic mission-led research and applied science organisation and New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, water and marine science. NIWA aims to guide the nation to a prosperous and resilient future by growing the economy, protecting people, assets and ecosystems, and enabling effective responses to environmental change.As part of the aquaculture group, you will contribute to this vision by aiding the development of a new premium sustainable seafood, for the benefit of New Zealand. NIWA's first commercial RAS farm is designed to produce 600 tonnes of Haku Kingfish (Seriola lalandi) each year, while minimising the impact of the surrounding environment. We anticipate significant onsite expansion to units capable of producing up to 3000 tonne over the coming years.What you will be doing:This position's main purpose is to provide the leadership, production planning & implementation, improving efficiency and enabling financial sustainable operations of NIWA's Commercial scale RAS in Bream Bay. It will also support the effective transfer and establishment of commercial RAS based production by industry within NZ. As the Production Manager, you will lead the day-to-day management and delivery of fish production, quality control, assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures and mentoring and training of staff. You will also be responsible for ensuring that the rearing systems and their equipment, are maintained & operate efficiently. This is an influential senior role, key to achieving financial and operational objectives in NIWA's commercial scale research production unit.As the Production Manager you will drive the highest standards of quality, welfare and innovation in NIWA's commercial aquaculture, adopting and adapting advanced technologies where appropriate.
