Principal Water Engineer at NZ Commerce Commission, Wellington or Auckland Te Komihana Tauhokohoko | The Commerce Commission is New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency.
We have recently been confirmed as the economic regulator for the Government's Local Water Done Well (LWDW) system and we're focussed on building our Water team to ensure we have the expertise in-house to deliver on our remit. We are looking for an experienced water sector engineer who is ready to take the next step in their career for the long term benefit of all New Zealanders.

We seek an industry recognised engineer who understands the challenges that water service providers face – particularly in terms of asset management, efficient investment planning and incentives - and the role they play in providing a service to their communities. The role can be based in either our Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) office or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) office.

The work of the Commerce Commission will give New Zealanders peace of mind that revenue collected by local government water services providers through rates or water charges is being spent on the level of water infrastructure needed. As a skilled engineer, you will provide both technical leadership and thought leadership with a focus on water and wastewater in the first instance. You will work closely with the Director, Water Implementation to ensure the successful design and delivery of the regulatory programme.
You will participate in discussions with ministries, other regulators and wider stakeholders and be able to convey the Commission's views with credibility and advise the Water team on technical issues. You will be able to communicate with people at all levels, including with Board members at the Commission and other public bodies.

The indicativesalary range for this role is $155,000 - $200,000 plus 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects their individual skills, experience, and internal relativities across the organisation.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Accreditation as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or equivalent
Knowledge of what best practice looks like, and the ability to constructively challenge water service providers investment plans and asset management practices
Knowledge of market trends and developments and the ability to distil threats and challenges to key stakeholders to inform the work of the Commission and engagement with stakeholders
Experience of the delivery of water infrastructure and services within the New Zealand local government context
Experience leading complex projects in a regulatory environment (at a regulator or in a regulated sector)
A willingness to look across a set of evidence and to give advice based on this evidence
Excellent communication skills, especially working with a diverse, multidisciplinary team
The ability to work in a dynamic and uncertain environment and a capability to innovate
A desire to share your technical expertise with others through coaching and mentoring
