An exciting opportunity to join NZ Customs as a Principal Project Advisor eGate Replacement Project is now available. This role is a full-time fixed term / secondment opportunity to 30 June 2025 based in our Wellington Customhouse.

About this role | Mo tenei turanga mahi The Principal Project Advisor eGate Project (Principal Project Advisor) will provide thought leadership, technical expertise, and pragmatic advice and outcomes to ensure that the project meets its accountabilities and agreed deliverables. The eGate project is of strategic importance to the management and operation of the New Zealand border. It is a multi-agency project with Customs having the lead, and partnering with MBIE/Immigration and MPI/Biosecurity.

In this role, you will contribute to the project delivery with key focuses on assurance and risk, reporting, policy, legal and privacy assessments and advice to both the Project Manager and Senior Responsible Officer. The role will lead or facilitate complex or difficult pieces of work involving multiple agencies, lead and deliver high quality activity and advice, effectively anticipate the needs of key internal and external decision makers and develop and inform strategic and operational views on important project matters.

To be successful as Principal Project Advisor, eGate Replacement Project, the appointee requires the following knowledge, experience, skills, qualifications and personal attributes: Strong ability to assess, review, and analyse information from a range of sources accepting different points of view and constructively challenge thinking. Strong stakeholder management skills to build rapport and trust with senior members of organisations/agencies. Proven ability to identify and deal with complex and emerging risks, issues, problem solve and implement practical resolutions/solutions. Proven governance management skills and ability to work in complex project/programme environments. The ability to translate ideas into actionable strategic or operational activity for the project. Ability to work at a multi-agency system level and balance competing priorities and desired outcomes. Experience managing multiple work streams with fixed expectations while maintaining the integrity of the activity. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present information and ideas in an engaging manner to a variety of audiences. Demonstrated ability, and comfort, working in a changing environment. Proven track record of delivery under testing timeframes, budgets and external influences. Sound understanding of government agency environments and ways of working to achieve desired outcomes. Highly Desirable skills and attributes include… A recognised thought leader or subject matter expert in Risk and Assurance, Governance and Business/Financial Analysis. Experience in a border system related agency work programmes. A relevant tertiary level degree. This means: a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application; OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at the time of application. You may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand. You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level. Due to the nature of Customs work, you must have a clear Police record. The successful applicant will also be required to pass a drug test.
