Principal Policy Advisor at Department of Conservation, Wellington Make a meaningful impact to the community and conservation outcomes. The salary range for this position is between $112,469 - $150,996. Wellington location, permanent roles with flexible working options. This role will join our Biodiversity Systems Policy team to help us achieve better results for our precious and unique ecosystems, species, heritage and spaces. Recognising that the climate crisis is also a crisis for biodiversity, the team also leads work for DOC to bring a biodiversity lens to climate policy. Your role in this team can be shaped to build from your unique experiences and to support the team to provide effective, sound advice for Ministers. There are opportunities to work within DOC and across a range of government agencies to shape and lead policy advice that encourages long-term carbon sequestration and storage through our native ecosystems, and climate adaptation policy that encourages and works with nature. There are also opportunities to focus on changes to improve our conservation legislation and how it supports biodiversity outcomes, and to explore the policy implications around ensuring we are good Treaty partners. We are looking for motivated and passionate people from a range of policy backgrounds and experience – including regulatory, economic and Treaty – with a genuine interest in environmental or conservation policy. You will have demonstrated skills and experience in: partnering with the policy manager to drive the strategic policy agenda and set the direction in the team's policy domain; leading complex and sensitive policy programmes and projects requiring deep policy craft and/or technical expertise; providing authoritative and frank policy advice that recognises the choices and constraints Ministers face and anticipates needs; managing relationships at a senior level across the policy system and with key stakeholders outside of government to ensure that the Department is well connected; contributing to the performance of the team through providing peer review and quality control; taking a leadership role in cross-Policy Unit and cross-government policy projects; and Treaty analysis and cultural awareness – understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi including the willingness to engage in Te Ao Maori concepts and/or understanding tikanga Maori.
