At Environment Southland, we actively work towards enhancing the experience of living and working in a sustainable region.
As the Principal Governance Advisor , you will provide consistent and high-quality governance advice and support to Council's elected members, executive team and staff on governance and legislative matters e.g. Local Government Act 2002, Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987, Council's Standing Orders, Public Records Act 2005 and Privacy Act 2020, as well as meetings requirements and decision-making processes.
You will also have the opportunity to lead or support governance such as local body elections, by-elections, representation reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives within the team and wider organisation on governance matters including:
Understanding or knowledge of relevant local government legislation (Local Government official Information and Meetings Act 1987, Local Government Act 2002, Local Electoral Act 2001)
Undertake research and provide information and advice on Governance and democracy matters for elected members regarding their roles as required.
To be a trusted source of knowledge and guidance on governance matters.
Manage all information with care and respect in accordance with the Public Records Act 2005, Privacy Act 2020, Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 and all other relevant Local Government legislation.
You will Support business groups with Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA) requests.
This role will suit someone who is highly customer-oriented with a background in government and legislation.
You'll appreciate the need for political nous, impartiality and have demonstrated experience in building strong and effective relationships, as these will be your platform to ensuring your team is a trusted source of professional advice.
The work at Council is interesting and varied, with no two-days being the same. You'll need to be proactive, flexible and responsive, with excellent organisation and communication skills.

An initial offer of remuneration will be made within the range $97,740 - $103,170 per annum.
