Te Tuapae - System Leadership group acts as a trusted advisor and works with the business to set direction and priorities through strategy, policy, planning, evaluation, evidence, and insights. It leads the development of strategic Crown Maori partnerships to embed our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi. It also leads future thinking and strategic foresight capability, enabling innovation for improvement in the land transport system.
Te Tuapae - System Leadership uses research, analytics, evaluation, insights, and intelligence that provide evidence-based, strategic direction to optimise decisions as well as informing central and local government's strategic direction and policy.
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
The newly created Strategy team has been established to lead the development of strategic direction and guide the alignment of implementation planning and delivery to help NZTA achieve its purpose and priorities. It also has a role influencing external strategic direction and priorities.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join this new team as a Principal Advisor, where you will take a multi-outcome, long-term view and work across the organisation translating strategy into action that will make a tangible difference to improving land transport outcomes.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

Experience operating in a multi-disciplinary strategic team.
Experience providing effective strategy design, development, and implementation and the ability to successfully provide strategic advice and thought leadership in a delivery-focused organisation.
A good understanding of the transport sector and its challenges.
A broad base of transport economics knowledge and experience, and the ability to provide and effectively communicate economic analysis to craft strategy and guidance.
Ability to advise on strategic approaches to finance and funding for transport.
Understanding of advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to transport appraisal alongside cost-benefit appraisal.
Strong facilitation and influencing skills when collaborating on evidence-based strategy development, analysis, implementation, and review processes.
Project leadership and management experience.
Excellent verbal and numerical reasoning, along with advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and oral communication, initiative, and negotiation skills to effectively communicate strategic direction to diverse audiences.

Qualifications:

A tertiary qualification in economics is essential, preferably including transport economics.

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Maori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Maori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
