We're here to improve the quality of regulation so all New Zealanders can flourish. We lead the regulatory management system (the set of policies, institutions, processes and tools employed by central government to pursue and maintain good quality regulation) and contribute to the design and operation of individual regulatory systems.
We are a small group of dedicated professionals, working in a 'can do' environment.
About the roles: The Ministry has newly established Principal Advisor opportunities within the Reviews and System Capability Group undertaking regulatory reviews and assessing regulatory issues.
The group's core functions are to:
Uplift regulatory system capability using a variety of interventions and mechanisms Improve regulation and regulatory systems by undertaking targeted reviews of varying scope and scale. The Principal Advisor will lead and contribute to regulatory reviews by using their expertise to build initiatives within a collaborative operating model that leverages experience from across the organisation.
They will collaborate across all levels and contribute to the Ministry's broader initiatives, strategies, and approaches along with mentoring and developing other team members. The position functions in a complex and ever-changing environment. This is an opportunity to be innovative and drive meaningful change within New Zealand's regulatory systems. As a key part of a regulatory review team, you will lead important elements of large-scale regulatory reviews, and also own the investigation and resolution of one-off regulatory issues raised by a variety of stakeholders. You will be a smart thinker, able to quickly understand complex issues and articulate a sensible way forward. We have a fun, creative environment where we work collaboratively with both stakeholders and across government. With two large scale reviews already underway, and more anticipated soon, we are looking for people with a diverse set of skills to support the work we do.
We are looking for experienced individuals who are enthusiastic about joining our developing team and driving towards improved outcomes from our regulatory systems.
You will bring to the role: Experience in strategic policy, regulatory policy, economics, regulatory operations, law, investigations or other relevant areas Demonstrated ability to deliver products or projects within ambitious timeframes Motivated to find pragmatic solutions to drive better regulatory outcomes, and bring an innovation mindset to how the government operates Ability to quickly grasp new subject matter areas and comfortable making measured judgements even in the face of incomplete information Advanced critical thinking, reasoning, and judgement, with the ability to apply this in a policy or regulatory context Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with numerical and/or data literacy, with the ability to communicate issues and concepts clearly and concisely Ability to understand the different perspectives and dynamics of all the parties in a regulatory system Demonstrated ability to identify the best process and/or framework to review a regulatory system or issue Ability to work independently within established boundaries, escalate issues and opportunities as needed, and adapt quickly to changing circumstances In depth understanding of the public sector, including how agencies work, and the broader machinery of government is desirable.
