We regulate the health sector and are the primary source of advice on health matters.Mental wellbeing is an important issue in New Zealand and a priority for Government, with the newly established Minister for Mental Health portfolio. The Mental Health and Addiction Strategy and Policy group drives system leadership, and advises Ministers on a wide range of policy and strategic issues.Ko ake mahi - What you'll doYou will lead technically stimulating and rewarding work focused on development of a new strategy to prevent and minimise gambling harm. Gambling harm is a significant policy issue in New Zealand, with one in five people experiencing harm in their lifetime due to their own or someone else's gambling. This is an opportunity to sink your teeth into some "crunchy" technical work that will influence the health and economic impacts of gambling harm for years to come.You would also support other work of the team, such as the repeal and replacement of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992. The Act sets out the rules for when the government may intervene in a person's life to provide mental health treatment without their consent. Although it is only used for a small proportion of people each year, it has a significant impact on the lives of those who do experience it. We are in the process of drafting a Bill that is intended to take a more rights-based and recovery approach to compulsory mental health care - a once in a generation opportunity with a high level of public interest.In this role you will:undertake calculations to set levy rates relating to the problem gambling levy on the gambling industryuse financial modelling and technical policy analysis skills to develop a draft service plan for the gambling harm strategysupport the development of legislation, including providing advice on complex policy areas and preparing for the Bill to proceed through the Parliamentary stageslead a range of core policy work such as preparing briefings for Ministers and Cabinet papers, project management, engaging with stakeholders and preparing for a public consultationbe part of a collaborative team, working with colleagues across the Ministry and other agencies.For further background on these projects:As part of a supportive team, we will match people's strengths and interests to focus on different components of our work programme.
