They consistently provide and deliver top-notch and timely thought leadership and decision making as well as strategic, tactical and specialist technical advice to the Manager and team.The Principal Advisor Determinations is responsible for issuing decisions on determinations under delegated authority.As a leader in the team, the main responsibility of this role is to ensure that the determinations function is operating with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. They maintain high standards of quality in decision making in determinations, and communicate any systemic issues found in determinations to key stakeholders in the building regulatory system.Principal members of the team contribute to best practice both from a technical and process perspective. An important part of the role will be the coaching, training and mentoring of advisors and senior advisors. This is your opportunity to step up and utilise your extensive building and/or legislative knowledge to solve some complex issues and support compliance with building regulation. You'll be dealing with others who care just as deeply as you do about New Zealand's building industry to help them better understand the building code.As part of the Determinations team you will provide customers with binding decisions, guidance and clarity about the application of building legislation. Our customers include building owners, building consent authorities (e.g. local councils), agents for building owners (e.g. lawyers and consultants) and industry professionals (e.g. engineers).Play your part in shaping one of New Zealand's leading sectors that employs 250,000 workers and is set to contribute more than $41 billion to New Zealand's economy in 2023. The Determinations team are seeking a qualified candidate to help contribute to MBIE's stewardship/kaitiakitanga of NZ's building system. We do this by developing determinations on matters of doubt or dispute about the application of building legislation.Skills and Experience RequiredAn excellent understanding of the building code and a strong desire to resolve disputes and help those in the building industry to apply the code.Significant experience working with determinations under the Building Act 2004.A proven ability to clearly explain a regulatory framework (or similar) to a non-technical audience both verbally and in written communications.Experience working in a demanding and complex environment with statutory timeframes.Experience managing stakeholder relationships including with customers and technical experts.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and a passion for continued improvement.A passion and experience with developing capability in team members.Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.MBIE's goal is to create a resilient and high-performing economy that delivers real and ongoing quality of life for all New Zealanders.People are at the heart of our mahi, our way of working is guided by our values which shape our behaviours.Maia- Bold and brave.Pae Kahurangi - Build our Future.Our aspirations are echoed in our Maori identity - Hikina Whakatutuki - which broadly means 'lifting to make successful'.MBIE recognises the partnership founded under Te Tiritiri o Waitangi between Maori and the Crown and is committed to giving effect to Te Tiritiri o Waitangi.
