Refugees who arrive in Aotearoa all spend 5 weeks or more at the reception centre where they receive a full education programme managed by Auckland University of Technology (AUT). AUT seeks a primary trained, New Zealand registered teacher to work across a range of age groups in the Modern Learning primary classrooms based at the Refugee Reception Education Centre. Desirable experience includes working in MLEs and working with former refugees. An ESOL qualification and knowledge of a second or third language are also desirable.
Teaching weeks do not follow the New Zealand school calendar and will be variable according to incoming groups of learners. In general, the role will involve working 4 days a week for a 5-week period, and then one week off, with the salary annualised.
Candidates for this role must have empathy for diverse learners who have had a refugee background. They should also have good intercultural communication skills and prior experience working with migrants or former refugees and/or special needs learners.
Salary Range: $81,000 - $96,000 - pro rata (appointment level and salary commensurate with skills and experience)
