Working as a Geriatrics Advanced Trainee Due to demographic shifts leading to increasing numbers of older people along with increased prevalence of chronic illness, Geriatric medicine has become a major branch of medicine. All medical practitioners are finding that an increasing proportion of their patients are older and look to Geriatricians for expert advice and opinion.
Geriatric medicine is very satisfying and rewarding. It combines intellectual challenge, general medicine, and teamwork. It brings together acute and chronic care as well as hospital and ambulatory medicine. Rehabilitation is a major focus. In Advanced Training in Geriatric Medicine, you will explore in-depth specialty training in the diagnosis and management of complex and/or multifactorial disorders that impact the functional and cognitive status of the older person.
Medicine Registrar Runs Geriatric Medicine Registrar runs in the Auckland region are six months in length, following which you may rotate into a different run.
Types of Jobs Available There are two types of jobs available:
Advanced Training Registrar Positions in Geriatrics You will need to have passed the RACP Written Exam and be registered to sit the Clinical Exam for 2023. These positions will only be offered to those who have passed the Clinical Exam and completed basic physician training. Six Month Allocations Must be eligible to apply for a General Medicine Registrar position in Auckland. You will need to be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Support and assistance with this process is provided. For those completing the exam later this year and should you not pass, you will no longer be eligible for an advanced training position; however, you may be considered for a Geriatric Medicine run allocation.
Working as a Medical Oncology Advanced Trainee Within the Medical Oncology Department, there are 31 SMO's, 11 Registrars, and 1 House Officer. The department is accredited for 7 Advanced Trainee registrar positions for 24 months of core medical oncology, and has a Director of Training overseeing the training programme.
The department works in tumour-specific teams with consultants specializing in 1-2 tumour types. Training registrars rotate through these outpatient clinic teams on a 3-monthly basis to cover all major tumour types as well as inpatients and thus gain significant experience in both common and rarer cancers.
Registrars will also work with the wider multidisciplinary team, including Radiation Oncologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists, a Clinical Psychologist, and Oncology Nurses who attend multi-disciplinary team meetings.
Clinical Research is an important part of oncology, and we have a large dedicated clinical trials research department which encourages registrar involvement.

These positions will only be offered to those who have passed the clinical exam and completed basic training. For those completing the exam later this year and should you not pass the exam, you will no longer be eligible for advanced training position and you may be considered for a run allocation. Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Support and assistance with this process is provided. Six Month Allocations Must be at least a Basic Trainee Registrar with the RACP, ideal for those with 6 months General Medicine experience. Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Support and assistance with this process is provided. Part-time and reduced FTE placements will be considered.
