We are looking for two analysts to join our Local Government Policy and Operations Group: one permanent role in our Natural & Built Environment team, one fixed term role (to end of June 2025) in our Operational Policy team.
Mō te tīma | About our teams The Local Government Branch - Ue te Hīnātore is the Government's lead advisor on local government.
We provide a long-term vision for the local government system and what is needed to ensure its effective operation and delivery for the people of Aotearoa New Zealand.
We blend local government expertise, specialised policy advice and operational delivery and oversight.
The Natural & Built Environment policy team works a lot in collaboration with, and to influence, other agencies.
We bring a unique "bird's eye view" within central government of the range of work programmes across agencies related to natural hazards and climate change, resource management, housing growth, transport, and tourism, and how those impact on local government.
We are also involved in a number of new projects in the local government policy work programme recently announced by the Prime Minister.
The Operational Policy team's work programme is broad and dynamic, from providing advice to the Minister of Local Government on the use of Intervention Powers under the Local Government Act 2002, to supporting communities on Aotearoa's offshore islands and the Chatham Islands.
The team also administers legislation like the Dog Control Act and the Rates Rebate Act, and supports the Department's role in the local elections process.
Mōu | About you To succeed in one of these roles you will need: * experience in, or good knowledge of, the local government sector or system * good writing skills and experience with policy analysis * the ability to operate in ambiguous situations, and find opportunities to build relationships * a collaborative disposition and learning mindset, open to finding creative ways to communicate information Please clearly state which role you are applying for in your cover letter.
