Orthopaedic Surgeon - Generalist Role
Timaru Hospital, South Island, New Zealand

Right now, we have a vacancy for an Orthopedic Surgeon to join the team at Timaru Hospital. Located in the South Island of New Zealand, the district of South Canterbury is centrally located and an easy place to live and work, with instant access to an array of outdoor activities.

Orthopaedic Department at Timaru Hospital
The team of five surgeons actively service the 131-bed hospital and are supported by 3 Registrars (1 training) who take the first call during normal business hours and some weekends.
The department is supported by an interdisciplinary team approach, including physiotherapy services, with parallel clinics and in-house hand therapy. A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) supports case management across the service, undertaking orthopaedic nurse-led clinics, arthroplasty monitoring, and complex casting support. Elective list management and acute case scheduling is also managed by the Clinical Nurse Specialist-Orthopedics.
Orthopaedic Specialist Role
This is a generalist position and the person in the role will be required to undertake upper and lower limb procedures, general orthopaedic trauma, and have the ability to undertake hip and knee arthroplasty. The work environments include theatre and out-patient clinics.
The position is part-time or full-time (let us know your preference) and works during the normal business hours of work between 8.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday. The after-hours roster frequency is 1:5-1:6, to provide cover outside of the normal hours of work, at weekends and on Public Holidays.
Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury is responsible for the delivery of services throughout the South Canterbury region and Timaru Hospital (131 beds) serves a district population of approximately 50,000 based in a General Hospital Facility, providing our local community with critical 24/7 services.
Integrity, collaboration, accountability, respect, and excellence are at the heart of everything we do. We are a proudly diverse team, as we know a diverse and inclusive workforce achieves the best outcomes for our patients and communities. If you share in these core values and bring them into every aspect of your patient care, we welcome your application.
Why Timaru and the South Canterbury region?
We are the best big little city you will find, located on the coast and Caroline Bay, with the majestic Southern Alps in the background. Timaru is family-friendly with easy access to an array of outdoor activities – beaches, ski fields, lakes, mountains, and hiking tracks. The primary and secondary educational facilities are superb, and there are two internationally renowned Universities within two hours' drive North and South from Timaru.
Free parking and an easy commute to work really helps with true work-life balance!
