Daily Responsibilities
Develops, coaches, and directs Optical personnel. Monitors employee performance and provides proactive feedback to promote teamwork and accountability among employees. Participates in the employment process by making recommendations for hiring, promotion, and termination. Responds to employee concerns using problem-solving skills, tact, and discretion in accordance with the Costco Employee Agreement and other applicable regulations. Participates in Optical employee evaluations. Approves timecards and other reports. Implements and upholds proper Optical and general safety procedures and standards.
Coordinates Optical schedule. Reviews Optical sales, benchmarks, expenses, and productivity figures. Monitors department profit and loss and adjusts plans as necessary. Monitors department cleanliness.
Oversees and participates in Licensed Dispensing Optician duties as needed, including fitting and adjusting eyeglasses and dispensing contacts. Assists with counter duties and merchandise as necessary.
Approves and submits orders for equipment, merchandise, and supplies. Conducts bi-annual inventories of merchandise.
Oversees apprentices as required for certification qualification.
Exercises discretion and confidentiality with all employees and patient information.
Provides prompt and courteous customer service to members, employees, and suppliers.
Assists members with choosing eyeglass frames and lens options appropriate to prescriptions.
Fits and adjusts lenses to eyeglass frames. Dispenses eyeglasses and contacts.
Measures members' eyes for pupillary distance and determines bifocal placement.
Answers questions and addresses problems regarding prescriptions, merchandise, and services. Refers to physician when appropriate.
Processes sales. Organizes and fills member prescriptions. Places special orders to outside suppliers.
Stocks department equipment, merchandise, and supplies. Follows department procedures and standards for production, record keeping, merchandise, and merchandise storage. Cleans department.
Receives accurate payment for merchandise, makes changes, and processes checks, credit, and debit charges according to proper departmental procedures for paperwork and the performance of duties.
Education
High School Certification or higher required, training and apprentices as required by state.
Experience
Optician, management, employee relations, customer service, or comparable experience.
Computer Skills
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word.
Licenses and Certifications
State Licensing as Dispensing Optician or National Certification required by state-specific requirements.
Other Skills and Abilities
Good communication, strong interpersonal, organization, problem-solving, and math skills.
