Location: Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital
Service: Older Persons Mental Health | Mental Health and Addictions
Contract: Permanent - full-time or part-time available
About the role | Korero mo te turanga
You will be working as the second Consultant Psychiatrist in a community old age psychiatry service. The service also currently has a full-time registrar.
Most people are seen in their own homes, though can be seen as outpatients. You will work closely with the geriatricians and wider older person's health services. The team does not have inpatient beds, so people requiring admission are admitted into the Adult Mental Health ward or Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation ward, depending on their needs.
You will mostly be treating people with dementia and associated psychiatric or behavioural problems, and people with late (over the age of 65) onset mental illness. People under the age of 65 with dementia are often managed by the team, as are some older people with long-term mental illnesses.
The Mental Health Service has a robust Peer Review Group and you will have access to CPD activities to meet ongoing registration requirements.
The Older Persons (Pakeke) Mental Health Service provides support to help older people experiencing serious mental health problems reach their best possible function and wellness.
Our aim is to enable individuals to continue living as independently and meaningfully as possible in the environment of their and their family's choosing.
We generally work with people aged 65 years and over who have mental health problems and/or people with dementia complicated by complex behaviour and/or psychological symptoms. The team provides a 'specialist behavioural management with dementia' service. The team is based at the Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Our team consists of staff from a wide variety of backgrounds who are skilled in supporting older people, their whanau and communities. Our team includes:
Nurses
Psychiatrists
Clinical Psychologists
Social Workers
Kaitakawaenga
Occupational Therapists
Registered Nurses
Community Support Worker
Our team is supported by administration and a management team. Our team also provides training experience for students from a range of health professions e.g. student nurses. Students are supervised by a health professional.
The service covers the whole Hawke's Bay region with clinics in Central Hawke's Bay to the west and video-linked assessments in Wairoa to the north.
