Operations Planning Engineer - WellingtonAt Transpower, we plan, build, operate, and maintain the National Grid - $5B of critical infrastructure that is the high voltage backbone that transmits electricity around the country 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In our dual role as Asset Owner and System Operator, we run the wholesale electricity market and operate the power system in real time. We connect the generators of electricity with electricity retailers via the wholesale electricity market and manage the flow of that electricity across Transpower's high-voltage transmission network to local lines companies and large industrial customers connected directly to the grid.

About the team The Operations Planning team coordinates and assesses outages and provides engineering advice to enable the safe and secure operation of New Zealand's power system. The team prepares plans and advice for the real-time control room teams on operational engineering matters to maintain power system security.
The team works across different time frames - from near real-time to looking at major projects and changes on the Grid over the longer term.

The role Based in Wellington, you will work with real-time coordination centres and other engineering teams to help embrace new technologies and changes brought about by the move toward decarbonisation.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Carrying out power flow analysis to assess the impacts of taking grid assets out of service and conveying the outcomes to internal and external customersAdvising our customers on the market impacts of taking assets out of service, of changing their capabilities, and on special protection schemesAssessing asset capability information and updating network models and advanced engineering applications in response to changes in the transmission networkAssessing transmission assets commissioning plans to ensure commissioning activities are carried out safely and without compromising power system securityHelping to implement tools and process changes due to technology and industry changesAbout you Your ability to innovate, collaborate and embrace change will see you thrive in our operational environment. You're a problem solver and someone who enjoys putting pieces of a complex puzzle together.
Naturally curious, you're keen to understand how your work feeds into the bigger picture, while happily staying focused on the task at hand.
To be considered, your CV, cover letter and experience to date will demonstrate: A bachelor's degree in Power Systems or Electrical/ Electronic EngineeringMinimum 3 years of experience in electrical engineering or a related fieldKnowledge of power system operations i.e. electricity generation / transmission / distribution networks / protection systemsGood analytical skills, time management and attention to detailAbility to step up and successfully lead tasksStrong communication and relationship skillsAbility to deliver high quality work in a fast-paced and timebound environmentStrong collaboration skills within a team and across the organisationProficiency in computer-based tools and applications, in particular power flow analysis tools, will be highly regarded. Training will be provided to complement your skills.
