We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Maori, te ao Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The Rakiura Operations Manager leads a close-knit and truly passionate team of rangers, as well as the District Leadership team who are responsible for biosecurity and biodiversity, managing visitor and heritage sites, and working with mana whenua and the local community.
This role calls for a confident and inspiring people leader with a successful track record in managing and leading teams.
The position will be focused on:
leading the district's operations team to ensure effective integrated delivery of high-quality conservation outcomesfostering and continuously enhancing team wellbeing and culture through strong engagement, empowerment, guidance, and ongoing development is critical.Some of the major programmes of work that you'll get to be part of include:
Saving the Southern New Zealand dotterel and hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin)Rakiura Track – Great Walk - hut wardening and track maintenanceDune restoration programmes including the most significant in the Southern Hemisphere – Mason BayPest-free Ulva Island/Te WharawharaPredator Free Rakiura and much more!Whakawhanaungatanga will be a guiding principle throughout this mahi and will enable you to foster, enhance and develop new relationships both with treaty partners, community stakeholders and the wider Rakiura community.
Please note this is a parental leave cover, commencing mid/late August.

This role requires an experienced people leader who is skilled at inspiring, motivating, and directing teams who will shape a culture that values continuous improvement. There is a strong relationship management component to this role requiring high levels of integrity and resilience to navigate complex and diverse relationships in a small community. This will include working alongside whanau, hapu, iwi collaboratively and effectively, as well as the community, businesses, and others.
