License Agreement New Zealand: Seaweed Industry Pilot Expands
Scientists from Nelson's Cawthron Institute have joined a $5 million pilot aimed at creating a sustainable commercial seaweed industry in New Zealand.
The scientists are conducting a seaweed-growing trial at a mussel farm off the coast of Motueka as part of the Greenwave Aotearoa regenerative ocean farming pilot, extending the project beyond the top of the North Island.
Algae team leader Paul South said the pilot would move into sites across the Marlborough Sounds over the coming months.
While Cawthron was working separately to understand if other...

How Seafood and Fisheries Could Benefit From The Proposed Farm Bill
This week Senator John Boozman released the framework for a Senate farm bill that is "farmer-focused." While the farm bill has primarily centered on meeting the needs of farmers, ranchers, and foresters, the latest framework also addresses fisheries.
"As the House and Senate continue work on proposed Farm Bill legislation, the emerging framework for the first time reflects a significant focus on fisheries," National Fisheries Institute President Lisa Wallenda Picard commented in a statement Friday. "Those leading the charge to craft a responsible path forward for...
Praise For Brazil's New Spiny Lobster Rules
Brazil's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) recently published a joint ordinance creating an unprecedented rule for the 2024 season of catches of two different types of spiny lobster: red lobster (Panulirus argus) and green lobster (Panulirus laevicauda). The new rule limits the total allowable catch to 6,192 tons.
There have been concerns for years about the overexploitation of the fishery, leading to non-profit organization CeDePesca to work on a Brazilian lobster fishery improvement project (FIP). The organization celebrated the adoption of the...
Alaska Lawmakers Rejected Gov. Dunleavy's Appointment of a Talk Show Host to a Lucrative Fish Job
In May, the Alaska Legislature narrowly rejected a conservative talk radio host's appointment to a highly paid position regulating the state's commercial fisheries.
Now, after the failure of that pick, Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy has chosen a new appointee with a similar — though not identical — background for the six-figure job at the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission, or CFEC.
In an unannounced decision, Dunleavy selected Rick Green last month, according to a letter to Green that the governor's office released...
DFO Enforcement Official Says Many Arrested in Elver Fishery Will Face Charges
Department also examining tracking system to ensure baby eels being sold were caught legally
A top federal fisheries enforcement official says it's likely many of those arrested this spring for illegally fishing for baby eels along Nova Scotia and New Brunswick rivers will be charged as part of enforcement efforts to try to rein in an out-of-control fishery.
Tim Kerr, the Maritime director of conservation and protection for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said he believes deterrence is working, and the...
DFO Considers Cuts to Commercial Elver Quotas to Boost First Nations Access
Federal officials are considering handing over to First Nations a much greater portion of the lucrative but highly fraught Maritime fishery for baby eels by slashing the quotas of commercial outfits that have long held licences in the industry.
The potential move is outlined in a letter sent to licence holders this week by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which has grappled in recent years with widespread unauthorized elver fishing. In March, the department cancelled this year's spring season...
Record High Ocean Freight Rates Amidst Red Sea Crisis, Major Ports See Growth
Ocean freight rates are heading to record high levels with global events like the Red Sea crisis; port congestion especially in the Middle East and Asia regions; container repositioning imbalance – with there being higher number of empty containers in Colombo and the Gulf region instead of China; and strong container demand being seen as prime causes.
Freight rates are up. And the Drewry index is up 2 times y-o-y in year-to-date CY24.
Commercial Lobster Sector Concerned About Out-of-Season Fishing in St. Marys Bay
Officials with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in southwest Nova Scotia say they don't know how much lobster is being landed outside of the commercial fishing season in St. Marys Bay.
That admission came during a meeting on Wednesday in Yarmouth as part of the advisory committee for Lobster Fishing Area 34, the lucrative fishing grounds from Digby to Baccaro Point.
The meeting concentrated on conservation and protection, with fishermen and industry reps raising concerns about the amount of lobster Sipekne'katik First Nation fishers take from the...

Quahog Commission Recommends Transplants and Seeding the Bay - But How Much Will it Cost?
The final report from a legislative commission studying the decline of quahog harvests in Narragansett Bay recommends transplanting more of the hard-shelled clams from tainted areas to cleaner waters, expanding a program to seed the Bay with babies, and exploring the idea of building a shellfish hatchery to augment wild stocks.
The report does not recommend what the commercial shellfishermen who were on the commission want: changes to 20-year-old nitrogen restrictions on discharges from sewage treatment plants that...

B.C.'s Drought: Low Snowpacks Remain a Concern for Salmon Experts
This story is the third of a multi-part series running throughout June exploring the wide-ranging impacts of persistent drought conditions seen across the province since 2022.
Experts are concerned that low snowpack levels recorded across much of B.C. this year could lead to negative impacts on salmon populations later this summer.
Last year, severe drought conditions and high temperatures caused experts to sound the alarm over potential devastating effects on the province's salmon populations.
Fish protection orders were issued for some...

Texas Shrimpers Dying at a Staggering Rate
Texas shrimpers face grueling work during monthlong boat stints in the Gulf of Mexico, and their limited health care access onshore adds to the industry's striking fatality rate, a team of UTHealth researchers found.
"For example, research shows that self-medication is an issue among commercial fishermen," said Shannon Guillot-Wright, an environmental and occupational specialist at UTHealth Houston who led the research. Her team's study was published last week in the American Journal of Public Health and looked at how workers dealt with the hazardous conditions, strenuous labor...

Russia plans to further increase supplies of its pollock to China as the demand for the fish in the Chinese market and its consumption is steadily growing.

According to the Russian Sfera FM business paper, citing the Russian Pollock Association, at present there...

The oysters in question were distributed by Dailyfresh Shellfish, Inc. with lot #240531JM. It's believed that the oysters, which were harvested from Subarea 23-10 in BC, Canada on May 30, 2024, may be contaminated with toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). This advisory comes about a week after the FDA issued a warning for shellfish harvested from Washington and Oregon due...
Willapa Bay Shellfish Closure Begins to Ease
Some commercial harvest of oysters and other shellfish has reopened for parts of Willapa Bay, where a sudden surge in Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) brought the important industry to a temporary halt in late May.
The Washington State Department of Health announced the reopening of Nahcotta, Cedar River, North River, Nemah River and Naselle River for commercial shellfish harvesting activities. Despite the reopening, DOH emphasized that lot testing will be required for all shellfish due to elevated risks of Harmful Algal Blooms in these areas to ensure safety...
Mexico Expedition Sights Only 6 to 8 Vaquita Porpoises, The Most Endangered Marine Mammal
The number of Mexico's critically endangered vaquita marina porpoises sighted in the Gulf of California fell to between 6 and 8 this year, researchers said Tuesday.
But it is possible that some of the few remaining vaquitas — the world's smallest porpoise and most endangered marine mammal — may have moved elsewhere in the Gulf, the only place in the world where they live.
Last year, experts on a sighting expedition estimated they saw from 10 to 13 of the tiny, shy...
