The Opportunity We are looking for a Natural Hazards Adaptation Specialist to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis in our busy Dunedin office.
The purpose of this position is to support the timely and effective delivery of ORC services and work programmes related to the management of natural hazards, in particular for natural hazards and climate change adaptation.
As a Natural Hazards Adaptation Specialist, you will be responsible for:
Assisting with the timely and effective delivery of the Council's services related to natural hazards adaptation.Interpreting, analysing, and evaluating data (quantitative and qualitative).Preparing technical and engagement reports and updates to governance.Identifying and reporting trends and emerging issues in the field of natural hazards and climate change adaptation and risk management.Assisting communities and stakeholders to understand, develop and implement natural hazards adaptation approaches, strategies, and plans.Developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with relevant central government agencies and territorial authorities.If you are interested in protecting Otago from natural hazards, climate change adaptation, and working with local communities, then this is the role for you!
About You Our ideal candidate will have:
A relevant tertiary qualification in social science, environmental science, geography (human and/or physical), policy, planning, earth or physical science or associated fields.Sound knowledge of natural hazards risk management, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and planning strategy development.Demonstrated scientific and analytical rigour.Well-developed and proven communication, presentation, and writing skills for a wide range of audiences.Ability to work in a complex work environment, to deal with ambiguity, and across functions.An understanding and passion for applying te ao Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi to natural hazards and climate adaptation planning practice, supported by the Council's Significance, Engagement, and Maori Participation framework.Experience planning and delivering community engagement activities.What we offer We recognise and celebrate diversity within Team ORC and are committed to providing a work environment that supports inclusion and equal opportunities.
