Pass it on.DOC is accountable for managing more than 1700 Contaminated Sites across the country.
These sites are all listed as HAIL (Hazardous Activities and Industries List) sites and are contaminated because of various historical industrial land uses including resource mining, agriculture, horticulture, landfill and fuel storage.
Often these land assets have been vested to DOC and may become a liability and a risk to staff, the general public and the surrounding environment from subsequent leaching of waste or contamination by-products.
He angitutanga | About the roleAs a National Advisor for Contaminated Sites, you will be responsible for advising our Operations Teams in managing contamination at place, as well as contributing to our national Contaminated Sites Programme as a trusted technical advisor supporting informed decision-making, investment and ensuring best practice in investigating and remediating contaminated sites on Public Conservation Land.
You will set and maintain the technical standards for our project managers, consultants and contractors to adhere to, as well as being responsible for maintaining our databases of contaminated sites information and liaising with regulatory authorities.
The role will be accountable to the Programme Manager for the National Contaminated Sites Programme.Remediation of contamination on conservation land is complex, particularly sites related to the historic mining of elements and minerals such as gold, mercury, asbestos and antimony.
DOC's Contaminated Sites are of strong interest to mana whenua, and often associated with protected heritage assets and locations, sensitive ecological environments and highly valued recreational areas, so this will be an exciting as well as a challenging programme of work.
Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and experienceYou will be a natural connector and a problem solver with extensive experience in assessing site contamination and overseeing remediation works.If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you!
A certified environmental practitioner specialising in site contamination (CEnvP CS) or equivalent and an environment related tertiary qualification.Technical excellence in the Contaminated Sites discipline, specifically broad knowledge of soil contaminants, remediation strategies, site sampling technique, investigation etc.Familiar with Contaminated Sites and Vulnerable Landfills Remediation Fund Process.Proven success with Regulators to close out contaminated and hazardous sites.Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse teams, clients, and regulatory authorities.You are someone who thrive on collaboration, building and maintaining relationships.Full driving licence Desirable: Working knowledge of regulatory environment in New Zealand including resource management and health and safety requirements.
