We offer assistance to those who are marginalised through social and economic factors and who are at risk through unemployment, inadequate housing, family breakdown, addiction, financial difficulties or mismanagement, abuse or other difficulty.We work in preventative ways and in response to crisis with education and training, addiction support and counselling.
Through our work in the community, we empower people to successfully re-integrate into society with renewed self-esteem, fostering independence.About the PositionAs a key member of the City Mission Social Impact Team, the Advocacy Coordinator will make a vital contribution to the Mission, to our clients and to our community.
Based in Ashburton we need to engage with/oversee the team of volunteers.The key focus of the role:Support and advocate for clients experiencing an adverse event.
Walking alongside clients – doing with them, not for them.
This can include but is not limited to support with MSD processes, tenancy difficulties, family disputes, ACC, health, and other community services where they may be experiencing barriers to accessing services and/or having their needs met.Build relationships and networks with community–based organisations, relevant government agencies and parishes as necessary and promote Mid-Canterbury Advocacy through networking, events, media, and social media as appropriate.Engage, train, and supervise the advocacy volunteers, including oversight, advice and support with cases and discussion, feedback, motivation, encouragement for the team members.This is a permanent part-time position.
The days and hours of work are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, 4 hrs per day.
Tuesday, 8 hrs (some flexibility).Ideal AppointeeWe are seeking a candidate with the following skills and experience:Level 4 certificate in health and wellbeing or equivalent combination of qualification and experience.Experience working alongside and supporting people who are on a journey of growth and change in their life.Experience working alongside people with high and complex needs.Experience in working alongside people with mental health issues, substance misuse and trauma.Experience working in social services and/or related qualification preferred.Understanding of, or lived experience of addiction, mental illness or homelessness.A warm, welcoming and empathetic manner, with good listening and communication skills and the genuine ability to get along with people from all walks of life.The ability and desire to show cultural sensitivity, awareness and understanding of marginalization and diversity.Initiative and passion for problem-solving and continuous improvement.Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.Excellent computer skills with experience in use of Microsoft products, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.Demonstrated conflict resolution and crisis management skills.A working knowledge of social and community support services and networks in Canterbury.Knowledge, and commitment to ongoing training about Te Reo, and Tikanga Maori.Commitment to a culture that fosters high standards of ethics and integrity, is personally trustworthy, delivers on promises and honours commitments.The ability to work largely unsupervised and to be self-motivated however also have the ability to also work effectively as part of a co-operative and mutually supportive team.The ability to set and keep safe boundaries and recognize one's own limitations.Alignment with the ethics and values of the Christchurch City Mission, and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.In return, we can offer you a rewarding role within a fun and supportive team environment, where no two days will be the same!
